2nd Stop: Platypus Kitchen (Bugis Junction)

Platypus Kitchen (Bugis Junction)

The next stop on the food trail was Platypus Kitchen, a casual Mediterranean/Italian style bistro specializing in handmade pastas, gourmet risottos and other main dishes. Want to know the menu that Platypus Kitchen offers? The menu can be viewed here.

If you are wondering what this food trail is about, it is a food trail organized by omy.sg and food establishments in Bugis Junction, which explores food establishments located in Bugis Junction. If you want to know all the establishments that were visited, please click here.

This would not be my first time to Platypus Kitchen, but it was definitely a memorable one as I tried the sides and dessert (love it)! What made this visit different was the presentation made by the owner, through which I got to know more about Platypus Kitchen: how freshness is emphasized along with the belief that food should be made affordable (all the dishes are priced under S$20) for the masses to be able to enjoy gourmet food (getting your value for money). Oh, and the owner doesn’t like misrepresentations, so the food items that are served are true to those illustrated in the menu. That being said, I do like the concept of affordable good (quality gourmet) food (who doesn’t?).

This time I managed to capture the warm colors and friendly contemporary décor of Platypus Kitchen, along with the comfortable chairs. ^^

Awaiting the food....
On to the food… We were presented with...

3 appetizers/sides:

1. Crab Cakes @ S12.90 (soon to be S$9.90)

Crab Cakes
Three potato fritters stuffed with chunks of crab claw meat, deep fried and served with lemon
Crab Cakes
Crab cakes with the sauce on the side ^^
Thoughts: The chunks of crab claw meat chunks were generous with a nice balance of potato, the lemon slice and accompany sauce that came along with it made it ‘lighter’.

2. *Risotto Balls* @ S$8.90

Risotto Balls
Mozzarella-stuffed balls of risotto, breaded in panko then deep fried and served over of rich pumpkin puree
Thoughts: Now this would have to be my favorite! The mozzarella was a good cheesiness accompaniment to the deep fried breaded (crispy) panko, and the risotto had resemblance to that the soft fluffy texture of mashed potato. The pumpkin puree made it even more yummy!

3. *Truffle Fries* @ $6.90

Truffle Fries
Thick cut French fries seasoned with white truffle oil tossed in Truffle salsa and topped with shaved truffles
Thoughts: If you want a substantial appetizer/side and love the strong taste of truffles, you have to try this. The fries here have a very strong flavor of truffles, which might not agree which everyone, but I found it nice especially all that cheese (?) and actual shaved pieces of truffles. Yup, this one is going into the favorites list. ^^

Next were the drinks (which were the cocktails and had real fruit in them!)

MoMo-Lychee Ale and Smith’s Ale
MoMo-Lychee Ale (left) and Smith’s Ale (right)

1. MoMo-Lychee Ale @ $9.90 (a-la-cart) |  $6.90 (set price)

Larger beer flavoured with fresh peach and lychee nectar, then garnished with mint sprigs and fresh lychees

Thoughts: This was actually pretty nice and refreshing

2. Smith’s Ale @ $9.90 (a-la-cart) | $6.90 (set price)

Larger beer infused with green apples and lemons, then garnished with fresh apples, lemon and passion fruit

Thoughts: Since I don’t really like green apples (apples in general) I gave this a miss, but the other bloggers who tried it enjoyed it.

Finally the main dishes!

Main Dishes:

*Saffron & Caviar Risotto* @ S$19.90

Saffron & Caviar Risotto
Saffron infused risotto with char-grilled prawns and scallops then finished with sustainable caviar and fine herbs
Thoughts: The texture of the risotto was nice and not mushy at all, with just the right consistency. The ingredients used were fresh and the caviar was a nice touch. :)

Truffle Carbonara @ S$16.50

Truffle Carbonara
Egg Tagliatelle with double-smoked bacon and mushrooms in a truffle egg-yolk sauce
Thoughts: The double-smoked bacon added that nice smoky flavor. While the truffle egg-yolk sauce gave it a nice earthly flavor, together with the mushrooms.

*Squid-ink Scallops Ragout* @ S$16.50

Squid-ink Scallops Ragout
Squid-ink Tagliolini served with seared bay scallops in a light garlic-dashi sauce
Squid-ink Scallops Ragout
Yum yum
Thoughts: Now this is not a dish I would usually order (the black color of squid-ink usually ‘scares’ me off), but I am glad that I got to try this. All I can say is that it was not what I expected, and it tasted better than how I thought it would. It had a nice tangy taste to it which made it very refreshing and 'light' (love it). The specialty of this is that it was created to not stain your teeth (which is a good thing!), and it seems to be effective. So no worries about staining your teeth when eating this colored dish. :p

Spicy ‘Diablo’ Crab & Prawn@ S$18.50

Spicy ‘Diablo’ Crab & Prawn
Egg Tagliolini with prawns and crab claw tossed in a spicy egg sauce
Thoughts: It was spicy, so those of you who can't handle your spiciness that well be prepared. The ingredients used were fresh and the pasta was nice and chewy, with a simple spicy taste.

Pressed Pork Belly @ S$19.90

Pressed Pork Belly
Melt in your mouth pork belly served with braised apples, garden vegetables and a honey & clove apple glaze
Thoughts: The pork belly (layer of fat and all) was really melt in your mouth, soft and tender. However, the sauce having been made of fruits and honey was a little to sweet for my liking.

And the finale DESSERT!!

*Sea Salt Caramel* @ S$8.90

Sea Salt Caramel
Sea salt & caramel butter cream, chocolate peanut butter brittle, ganache and popping candy
Sea Salt Caramel
See the poppy candy? It was so delish!!!
Thoughts: I am not really a dessert person, but I totally love this! It wasn't very salty and the combination of the sea salt & caramel butter cream (melts in your mouth), chocolate peanut butter brittle (for that nice stickiness), ganache and popping candy (especially the popping popping candy) was very nice indeed!

*Indicates personal favorites! (must order - well for me at least)

Platypus Kitchen is currently having a 12-week Facebook promo (now in the 4th week). Complimentary Sea Salt Caramel  was given out last week. With a different item each week, you can claim yours by just liking their FaceBook page.
