Jusangjeollidae (주상절리대) / Columnar Joints along the Jungmun-Daepo Coast

After a fulfilling breakfast, the first stop of our Jejueco tour was the Jusangjeollidae (주상절리대) along Jeju's Jungmun Daepo coast, columnar joints (stone pillars piled up along the coast and is a designated cultural monument of Jeju island) which were formed from the volcanic lava from Hallasan mountain. The Jusangjeollidae (주상절리대) are essentially rock pillars (columnar jointed rocks) shaped like cubes or hexagons of various sizes and almost seem as if they were carved by nature's stonemasons.

The area where the Jusangjeollidae (주상절리대) are located is part of an olle course: the path will lead you along the coast all the way to the Jungmun beach with spectacular views of the columnar jointed rocks. So if you want to exercise and take in the scenery at the same time, this is one scenic route you can take.

The area just before the entrance is very park-like with sculptures of dolphins and other sea creatures

Although we did not walk the full course, the (mildly short) walk was rewarding as the view of the Jusangjeollidae (주상절리대) amidst the dark aqua-blue sea was breathtaking.

Columnar jointing form with the contraction of molten lava during cooling, splitting the rocks into polygonal columns. Columns typically have 5-6 sides, with each side being a separate joint.

A collection of adjacent columns is often referred to as a "colonnade". Cooling cracks closely spaced in irregular patterns are known as "entablatures".

Not to forget the beautiful trees that pepper the area

On the way back we spotted... fresh seafood (tasting)! Unfortunately, none in the group was enthusiastic about it that morning (perhaps it was too early in the morning)
Now a little side note about the tour. Our group consisted of 10 people: 5 of us, an elderly couple who also stayed at Jejueco and a Russian couple who stayed at another hotel (Victor went to pick them up), and of course, not forgetting our guide Victor. :)

After the view was admired and photos taken, we made our way back to the van, but not before making a stop at the souvenir shop. We bought some really yummy flavored rice puffs (tangerine and cactus). When were were done with our souvenir shopping, it was off to our next destination: Andeok Valley!
