Veganburg (Eunos) - Burgers with a Vegan Twist

Veganburg (Eunos)

Vegetarians rejoice, because now you can enjoy a guiltless yet healthy burger that is wholly vegan! Veganburg is like the vegetarian version of what a Macdonald’s or Moss Burger would be, just no meat and everything vegan. For those (open-minded) carnivores out there, it really isn’t as bad as it sounds, really.

The concept of a vegan burger place is an intriguing one and while the concept is fast food, it does cost slightly more than the average MacDonald’s meal. However, it is still affordable and reasonable enough (all that effort and nutrients that go into those soy patties, not to mention the creativity of the vegan burger combinations!). And just as with the usual fast food outlets, Veganburg offers the choice between just the burger or topping up to get a set (with comes with fries and a drink which you can select Subway/Carl’s Junior style – any drink of your choice from the dispenser). Sauces (e.g. chilli and ketchup) are also self-serviced from dispensers.

Veganburg has 4 outlets and its founding branch at Eunos is near the Eunos MRT (how convenient!). If it weren’t for J, who made decision to become a vegetarian, I think I would not have known about this wholly vegan burger joint (being more towards the carnivorous side and all), let alone actually eat at this intriguing place.

Anyways, I was the first o arrive and the sight that greeted me was oddly familiar (e.g. fast-food /café setting), yet unfamiliar at the same time (e.g. everything seemed very green literally with fake grass acting as backing for some of the seating and an array of seating options from benches to armchairs to chairs). It was close to dinner time and the crowd soon packed the place, which was a curious sight seeing so many people come to get eat vegan burgers.

Lawn for backing anyone? ^^

I had the Creamy Shrooms (which is apparently rich in copper and potassium) set which cost S$11.80 (the burger alone would have cost S$7.90). The seaweed fries that accompanied the burger were a delight – crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside with that tinge of familiar tasty subtle seaweed flavor. If you were just eating the fries alone, you would not be able to discern that you are in a place that serves vegan burgers!

Ok, on to the shroomy burger, which if you haven’t guessed by now is made up of mushrooms, lots of them; all that mushroomy goodness in a dairy-free cream sauce. The dairy-free cream sauce was similar to the real cream thing, except that it was not as heavy in texture and taste; it was somewhat refreshing and light on the palate. The sauce coupled with the mushrooms provided a nice velvety mushroom flavor with all that mushroomy goodness, minus the strong aftertaste that mushrooms usually have. The patty was moist but really tasteless if not for the sauce, and the whole wheat ciabatta bun which encased the mushroomy filling was soft and warm, the perfect combination!

J ordered something that was new on the menu (and to her as well) – the Grilled Paleo, a carb-free vegan burger that can double up as a hearty salad since they use lettuce or the like instead of bread patties to sandwich fresh vegetables such as broccoli, tomatoes, mushrooms, pineapple and even sauteed mushrooms topped with a tangy mustard dressing. She got the set at S$13.80 (with a choice between broccoli or seaweed fries and a drink), the burger alone would have cost S$9.90.

Don’t be deceived by the size of the burgers! We had planned for some dessert but after the burgers and fries, not to mention drinks, there was no room for more. It was a very satisfying and filling healthy dinner.

Recommended: For those (vegans and non-vegans alike) who want to try something different from the usual (vegan/fastfood) fare, which also happens to be healthy and taste pretty good as well.

Not Recommended: Hardcore carnivorous beings who are adverse to anything leafy or green, and/or beings who cannot accept the fact that burgers (or fast food in general) do not need to contain any meat or animal products at all.
