Exploring Singapore Zoo’s Night Safari: A Nocturnal Adventure

Singapore is home to some of the most innovative and immersive wildlife experiences, and the Singapore Zoo Night Safari is no exception. As the world’s first nocturnal wildlife park, the Night Safari offers a truly unique opportunity to observe nocturnal animals in their natural habitats under the cover of darkness. This award-winning attraction is a must-visit for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone looking to experience wildlife in a completely new way.

What Is the Night Safari?

Opened in 1994, the Night Safari is the first of its kind and has set the standard for nocturnal wildlife parks worldwide. It is located next to the Singapore Zoo, within the larger Mandai Wildlife Reserve, and covers 35 hectares of tropical rainforest. Unlike traditional zoos, the Night Safari operates only after dark, giving visitors the chance to observe the behavior of nocturnal animals that are usually inactive during the day.

Home to over 900 animals from 100 species, including endangered ones, the Night Safari recreates the natural habitats of creatures like Malayan tigers, leopards, Asian elephants, and flying squirrels, all in a serene nighttime setting.

Night Safari Highlights

1. Tram Ride: A Guided Nocturnal Tour

One of the most popular ways to explore the Night Safari is by hopping onto the Safari Tram, which takes you on a guided 40-minute journey through the park’s various geographical zones. The tram covers seven unique habitats, from the Himalayan Foothills to the Equatorial Africa region, offering close-up encounters with animals like elephants, giraffes, lions, and rhinos.

As you ride through the park, informative commentary provides insights into the animals’ behaviors, diets, and conservation statuses, making it an educational experience as well.

From my personal experience, the tram ride is a perfect introduction to the park. It’s comfortable, informative, and allows you to cover a large portion of the safari without missing out on any highlights. It best to catch the earlier slot to have more light to catch the animals in action, if you catch the later tram slots it might be hard to catch the animals as lights are limited to mimic their natural habitat as much as possible.

2. Walking Trails: Get Up Close with Nature

While the tram ride offers a great overview, the walking trails provide a more immersive experience. There are four main walking trails, each offering a unique perspective on the animals and their habitats:

  • Leopard Trail: Spot leopards, clouded leopards, and other fascinating carnivores in a well-designed environment.
  • Fishing Cat Trail: Watch as fishing cats hunt for fish in a riverine habitat, showcasing their impressive skills.
  • East Lodge Trail: Encounter African and Asian animals such as hyenas and red river hogs.
  • Wallaby Trail: Experience the wildlife of Australia with kangaroos, wallabies, and other animals native to the outback.

Walking through the dimly lit paths, with animals moving quietly in their enclosures, felt like a real night-time expedition!  It might not be advisable for those with vision issues as it is almost pitch black dark and really challenging to spot the animals if you are doing this after sunset. Still it was interesting to see the animals’ natural behaviors up close, without the rush of a tram at my own pace.

3. Creatures of the Night Show

The Creatures of the Night Show is a live performance that showcases the amazing abilities of some of the park’s nocturnal residents. You’ll be amazed as otters, civets, and other animals display their natural behaviors in a highly engaging and interactive 20-minute show. The playful nature of the animals and the engaging hosts make it a fun experience for the entire family.

Make sure pre-book your seats online as this show is a big hit with both children and adults. This was easily done via mobile when we were at the park, but to save the stress and excitement, you could always book it prior to your arrival.

There's also a light show  right before at the entrance which you can catch.

4. Night Photography

If you love photography, the Night Safari offers a challenge but also an opportunity to capture stunning photos of animals in their nocturnal state. Although flash photography is prohibited to avoid disturbing the animals, the dim lighting and natural settings allow for beautiful night shots with the right equipment and settings.

Bringing a camera with a good low-light setting or using your phone’s night mode can capture some memorable moments—just be mindful of the lighting and respect the animals’ space.

What to Expect at the Singapore Zoo Night Safari

1. A Different Perspective on Wildlife

The most fascinating aspect of the Night Safari is seeing how different animals behave when the sun goes down. Many of the animals here are much more active at night, such as leopards prowling their enclosures, or the fishing cat leaping into the water for a meal. It’s a completely different experience from visiting a zoo during the day.

2. A Serene and Mystical Atmosphere

Unlike the daytime zoo experience, the Night Safari is all about serenity. Dimly lit paths, the sounds of nature, and the calm of the night create a mystical ambiance. The park’s layout is designed to mimic natural moonlight, providing just enough light to guide your way while keeping the focus on the animals and their surroundings.

3. A Focus on Conservation

Like its sister attractions in Mandai, Singapore Zoo and River Wonders, the Night Safari is deeply committed to conservation. The park is involved in breeding programs and works to raise awareness about the importance of protecting endangered species. The staff and guides are incredibly knowledgeable about the conservation efforts underway and often share insights during the tram rides and shows.

Tips for Visiting the Night Safari

1. Book Tickets in Advance

The Night Safari is a popular attraction, so it’s a good idea to book your tickets in advance, especially during weekends or peak tourist seasons. The park opens at 7:15 PM, and tickets are available for specific time slots, so plan ahead to secure your preferred entry time.

2. Wear Comfortable Clothing

Since the park is located in a tropical rainforest, the humidity can be high even at night. Wearing light, comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear will ensure you enjoy your experience without feeling too hot or uncomfortable. Bringing a small insect repellent can also be helpful.

3. Arrive Early for the Best Seats

If you’re planning to watch the Creatures of the Night Show, make sure to arrive early to grab the best seats. The show is very popular and seating fills up quickly.

4. No Flash Photography

Remember, flash photography is strictly prohibited in the Night Safari to avoid startling the animals. If you’re looking to capture memories, be sure to use a camera or phone with good low-light capabilities.

5. Use Public Transport

The Night Safari is easily accessible by public transport. The nearest MRT station is Khatib on the North-South Line, from where you can take the Mandai Khatib Shuttle directly to the Night Safari. Alternatively, you can catch a taxi or use ride-hailing apps to reach the park.

The Singapore Zoo Night Safari is more than just a zoo visit—it’s a journey into the nocturnal world of wildlife, where you can experience animals in their most natural state.
