The Great Singapore Sale 2012

Great Singapore Sale 2012

This year’s Great Singapore Sale starts from 25 May to 22 July 2012, and is packed full with special events, extended shopping hours, contests and every shoppaholic’s favorite, discounts. The Great Singapore Sale is every shoppaholic’s dream, where more can be gotten with less for almost everything from fashion to watches, jewellery, electronics, toys and more all over Singapore!

Held on an annual basis, the Great Singapore Sale is co-organised by the Singapore Tourism Board to get tourists and locals into the shopping malls. Usually this 8-week shopping extravaganza brings an 8-10% increase in sales, so almost all shops in this sunny island is involved! While it is a sale period, you will not find steep discounts for electronics or branded items such as digital cameras, iPads or designer handbags. Instead you will find that ‘free’ gifts are bundled with you purchases. For example, I just bought a Sony DSC-W630/B digital camera at S$269 and it came with an extra battery (worth S$75), wall charger, free screen protector, complimentary camera bag and 8GB SD card. For last season’s clothes, jewellery and older models of electronics discounts range from 30-70%.

Besides store discounts and offers, you can take advantage of credit card offers as well (e.g. MasterCard has exclusive privilege where you can redeem exciting rewards and win priceless experiences when you charge to your MasterCard). The Great Singapore Sale in not limited to shopping, there are other promotions, special hotel deals, in addition to late night shopping, dining and entertainment options during this shopping extravaganza. The important thing to note is that some shops inflate their regular price tags so they can advertise bigger discounts during the sale, so always do your research before making that major purchase.

If you are tourist, the deals are a bit sweeter, not much privilege for locals to spend more though. For tourists simply, present your passport and boarding pass at to the information counter at any of the malls on Orchard Road to receive a “tourist privilege package”. This “tourist privilege package” includes discount cards, coupons for free coffee and mall vouchers to motivate you to start shopping.

In addition, if you spend a certain a free gift can be redeemed. For instance, spends more than S$2,000 at Ion Mall and you will get a complimentary ride to Changi Airport by limousine. Tourists can also claim a tourist tax refund on purchases over S$100.

With more than 50 hotels participating in this year’s Great Singapore Sale, from five-stars to budget hotels, you can find a hotel that suits your budget and even get to save a little. If you want something to occupy yourself between shopping sprees, you can get a “Explore Singapore Valuepack” which includes admission to popular attractions like Universal Studios, the Night Safari, and the Singapore Flyer, all for 25% less than buying the tickets separately. Or you can get the a (walking) cultural tour , where the new Chinatown Visitor Centre is also participating, offering S$5 off their cultural walking tours.
