Shifen Waterfall is regarded as one of the most scenic waterfalls and the largest cascading waterfall in Taiwan. It is open daily from 9am to 4:30pm, and admission is free. The waterfall is 40 meters wide and 20 meters tall; it creates rainbows as the water splashed into the lake. The waterfall was our second stop of our day tour and it was quite an experience.
We alighted and walked to the entrance, it was about a 15-20 minutes walk to get to the waterfall.
We had to cross a long, wooden boardwalk which was a littler slippery as it was drizzling.
A train station located down the river from the waterfall area was originally built for transporting coal. It's built right alongside Shifen Old Street (十分老街), and is now a part of Taiwan's history and culture.
The walk from the entrance to the waterfall is not tiring (if you take a leisurely stroll). However, there are a lot of steps (the stone steps are steep and can be very slippery when they are wet), so make sure you wear comfortable shoes that have good grip and enjoy the lush foliage along the way.
This is attraction is not wheelchair or stroller friendly.
Just before the waterfall there are swings and some sculptures
Past the sculptures and swings, is the entrance which leads to a pavilion and area were food is sold
Food
After making our way past the food stalls, we arrived at the waterfall. Although it was summer and a time when the waterfall was not supposed to be it's most majestic state (according to DramaQueen's friend), due to the typhoon that was passing by and intermittent rain, we managed to see quite an impressive waterfall.
Shifen Waterfall
As the water plunges down into the lake beneath, it creates a mist and if you are lucky, you will get to see rainbow. We managed to catch a glimpse pf a rainbow. Can you spot it in the below video? 😊
After admiring the waterfall, exploring the different angles and areas (which had lesser people) and taking quite a few photos, it was soon time to head on to our next stop - Shifen Old Street.
