Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao (Bugis Junction)

Crystal Jade has many offerings, different outlets with different concepts: from restaurants to causal dining, cafes and bakeries. Then there is Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao - a casual dine-in restaurant that serves up dim sum and Lanzhou handmade noodle, amongst other mouth-watering Shanghai delights and their signature Xiao Long Bao. Alas, we did not try the signature Xiao Long Baos as we were already too full! Those bowls of la mian are seriously big! (You have been forewarned.)

The Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao Restaurant is tucked away at the corner of the basement of  Bugis Junction. From the outside, it looks a little small but don't let it's looks deceive you because inside it is spacious and cosy (with hints of modernness too). The kitchen is an open-concept one, so you can see the action (well, most of it) that goes behind the scenes.

On the day that we went, service was prompt and the staff were pleasant; which made the dining experience all the more pleasant.

Between 2 persons, we ordered:

Pork Dumplings with Spicy Chilli Sauce (S$7.50)

Pork Dumplings with Spicy Chilli Sauce
Six succulent dumplings dosed in a concoction of vinegar, soya sauce and chilli oil.
Now, these were my absolute favorites and highly recommended! The spiciness (of the chilli sauce) was well accompanied by the saltiness (of the soya sauce) and the sourness (of the vinegar). It was not too spicy, but still had some 'kick' to it.

Sze Chuan La Mian Noodles

The noodles were nice and spicy and the soup full of ingredients!

Big bowl of noodles
Like I mentioned earlier, the servings for the noodles are humungous (ok that might be an exaggeration, but seriously one bowl can be shared between 2 persons). Unfortunately for us, we ordered two bowls and with the other dishes, we had a hard time finishing the noodles.

If you like your spicy sze chuan la mian, than this is certainly one noodle dish you can try. However, after the 'excitingness' of the (above) pork dumplings (with the sourness of the vinegar), all I could taste from the noodles was the spiciness.

Deep-Fried Beancurd with Salt and Pepper (S$7.50)

Deep-Fried Beancurd with Salt and Pepper
Simple yet addictive,  little cubes of delight!
These little deep fried cubes of beancurd looked plain, but once you bite into them, they are simply a delight! The beancurd cubes were coated with a thin layer of flour than fried to a golden crispy hue. Once you sink your teeth past the crispy layer, you are greeted by the soft texture of the beancurd. As the cubes have been tossed in grounded salt and pepper as seasoning, they resembled french fries (Chinese-style and beancurd cubes instead of potatoes); equally addictive and enjoyable!

Bamboo Shoots (S$7.80)

Bamboo shoots
Lastly, bamboo shoots! The shoots were done really nicely. They were tender, succulent and flavorful all that the same time. You have to try it to know what I mean.

Over all, the prices are affordable and for those that I can recall, the prices are stated (above). I would definitely go back to try the xiaolongbaos (they even have multicolored ones - how interesting!)
