Oedolgae Rock (외돌개) and a great sea view

The beginning of our journey! This trail is an Olle Sea Hike Path Station

Walking along the path (towards the Oedolgae Rock) was one of the highlights (since this was the final stop) of our Jejueco Tour. Being almost right next to the sea and surrounded by nature, it was a good place to take photos with its awesome coastal views, clear sea blue waters and ocean breeze in the background. There is no admission charge to see the Oedolgae Rock, which is located on the Seogwipo side of the island. For more information on how to get there you can check out the Visit Korea website.

However, I think if you purposely made an effort just to visit the Oedolgae Rock, you might be a little underwhelmed, because it is after all just a lone rock that stands at 20m high and surrounded by sea. What made the difference was the mystical legend that surrounds the Oedolgae Rock as well as the scenery that greets you when you walk along the path that weaves its way along the coast, allowing you to view the Oedolgae Rock, which is also known as the Lonely Rock, from different angles. The area that surrounds the Oedolgae Rock is apparently the filming location of the Korean drama series, Jewel in the Palace (大長今).

Victor (our guide) re-narrated the legend surrounding the Oedolgae Rock: that the Oedolgae Rock was actually the wife of a fisherman whose husband failed to return home one day. Worried and devastated (thinking the worse), she cries all the way into the sea where her body turns into stone. Her husband’s body floats towards the rock which was once the wife and turned into the flat base at the bottom of the Oedolgae Rock; together forever in the ocean that once separated them.

After viewing the Oedolgae Rock and enjoying the lovely scenery, it was time to head back to Jejueco, but we made an impromptu stop to the Teddy Bear Museum (제주 테디베어뮤지엄) & some dinner before heading back for the day.
